The role of birds in environment protection -

A Drama (Script)

(പരിസ്ഥിതി സംരക്ഷണത്തില്‍

പക്ഷികളുടെ പങ്ക് - ലഘു നാടകം)

(A child is sitting under a tree, studying a speech. The child read the final lines from a notebook)

‘Having said this much about the need to protect the environment, I conclude my speech. Thank you. Namaste.’

After closing the notebook, the child tries to recite the speech from memory.

‘Respected audience, dear friends,

The topic of today’s speech is the need to protect the environment.’

Just as the child finishes this, a crow—a child dressed as a crow—flies in. The crow enters, cawing... Ka... Ka...)

Child: I gave you food this morning, didn’t I? I’ve also kept water for all the birds over there. So why have you flown here, under this tree, now?

Crow: Little one, I haven’t come looking for food.

Child: Then why?

Crow: I and some of my friends were sitting on this tree branch, listening to your speech.

Child: There’s a speech competition about the need to protect the environment. I’m preparing for that. Hmm. Who were the other friends listening to my speech?

Crow: A Magpie-robin and a Crow Pheasant were there too. When we heard your speech, we felt sad.

Child:     Hmm! Call your other friends. I want to know what the matter is.

Crow: I’ll call them. They’ll also have something to say about why we’re sad.

Child: Okay, okay, call them too. Hurry up.

(The crow calls them. The Magpie-robin and a Crow Pheasant enter, looking sad.)

Child: Hey, what’s wrong? You all look very sad. Tell me what’s the matter.

Crow: I’ll start. We heard you reading about the things the government does to protect the environment and the things nature-loving people do.

Child: What? Aren’t all those things true?

Crow Pheasant: They are all true, but...

Child: Hmm. What’s this ‘but’?

Crow Pheasant: You didn’t mention a single word in your speech about the services we birds provide to protect the environment.

Child: Huh? Are you saying that you birds also work to protect the environment?

Crow: Oh! So you don’t know that either, do you? None of you have even thought about the work birds do for environmental protection, have you?

Child: I’m sorry, to be honest, I’ve never thought about it. It would be great if you could explain it.

Crow Pheasant: If you’re interested in listening, each of us can explain.

Child: Of course, I’m interested. Please, tell me. I’m listening.

Crow: Haven’t you heard everyone say that we crows are the  scavengers of nature?

Child: I have. Keeping the soil, water, and air from getting polluted is a good deed.

Crow: Besides that, we also help with seed dispersal. We are careful to pick up mangoes and cashews and deposit them in various places, instead of just letting them fall under the tree.

Child: That’s right, I agree.

Crow Pheasant: Have you ever thought about why plants and trees, as they grow, aren’t completely destroyed by caterpillars and other pests?

Magpie-robin: If certain birds like us didn’t eat small insects, pests, and caterpillars, there wouldn’t be this many trees in the country.

Crow Pheasant: We know that if any creature multiplies excessively, it will only harm the environment.

Child: Eating small insects, pests, and caterpillars that can harm the environment, and helping with seed dispersal are all indeed forms of environmental protection. I will mention these things in my speech.

All three birds together:  We are happy. Let’s all work together to protect the environment.
